On the football field, in the classroom, or with friends, freshman Dominic Nelson is putting his best foot forward and making the most of every opportunity.
Nelson’s academic schedule includes Biology, Cooking, Geometry, English, and Spanish. While he enjoys all of his classes, he shared that International Cuisine with Mr. Cabot Weaver has quickly become his favorite. “So far we’ve made pico de gallo and we made salted potatoes with onions,” he explained enthusiastically. As an aspiring chef, Nelson looks forward to the chance to express his creativity in the kitchen with an upcoming project in which students can design and cook their own dish from scratch.
Beyond the classroom, Nelson is making his mark on the freshman football team as both a receiver and kicker. Thanks to his family, football has been a significant part of Nelson’s life. “I always love watching football with my dad, and I played flag football a lot. Playing tackle football has always been something that I wanted to try,” he commented. Although this season is his first playing tackle football, he has already created some exciting memories on the field. His favorite moments include “getting a few catches and getting a lot of yards,” both of which gave him the chance to contribute to the team. Beyond the games themselves, Nelson also appreciates the team bonding, including the first pasta feed of the season.
Nelson loves more than just football, as he has played soccer since he was very young. Nelson typically plays left back, a position that allows him to combine defensive skills with speed and awareness on the field. This year, he hopes to try out for the Los Gatos High School Soccer Team and continue building on the years of experience he’s had. He explained, “I just like playing the sport. It’s really fun.
Beyond the field, Nelson fuels his adventurous side with mountain biking. He remarked that he started mountain biking because “my dad really got me into it, and he’s been mountain biking for a long time, so I’ve been doing it ever since I was really little, and I’ve just kept it up.” While Nelson enjoys biking around Santa Cruz and near the coast, his favorite spot is a mountain in Tahoe.
As a student-athlete, Nelson balances his academic responsibilities with practices, games, and personal interests. His positive attitude and willingness to try new things, whether they be experimenting with recipes in cooking class or tackling opponents on the football field, are helping him make the most of his freshman year. With his determination and enthusiasm, it’s clear that Nelson’s time at LGHS is just the beginning of a high school journey filled with accomplishments, growth, and plenty of memorable experiences.
