It should be okay for girls to feel good about themselves, and to be able to accept compliments. There is something wrong with the way our society frowns upon a self-assured girl. This discourages girls to feel beautiful, and to truly embrace themselves.

Last month, the Republican party shut down the government in an attempt to gain concessions regarding the Affordable Care Act. The House Republicans responsible for the shutdown have shown themselves to be inept as strategists, incapable as politicians, and dangerous as leaders.
Respect Tragedies
At face value, there’s nothing harmful about telling stories of shared experience. However, tales of uncles who knew someone who was kind of near Boston the week of the bombing are more than just annoying. Arbitrary connections to tragic events, and the competition surrounding these connections, are harmful to those actually involved in the incident and stem from a shameless need for attention and sympathy.
Pop Music Is Not “Bad”
As the hipster fad thrives at LGHS, the word “mainstream” has become synonymous with “inferior.” Our generation tries to be unique in any way possible, but music preference seems to be where most people try the hardest. It seems that many people think listening to underground music makes their taste in music superior.
Vine Racism is Not Acceptable
Over the past few months I have been absorbed into the new social media craze Vine, a new app that lets smartphone users create six second videos. At first, it was my guilty pleasure. I would obsessively scroll through the popular page and laugh until tears came out of my eyes, but recently the videos that have the most “likes” and “revines” use racism as a cheap punchline.
Keep Test Scores and Friends Separate
Students should try to stay away from the topic of scores and numbers, because the competition should be between their fellow applicants instead of their friends.
Let Your Anger Out
Anger is a taboo emotion. We judge anger in others, and try to suppress it when we feel it within ourselves. When we think about anger, we only see drivers filled with road rage and giant green monsters. However, we don’t immediately see the growth and passion that anger can represent.
Recognize Female Comedians
Women are not given nearly as much freedom and opportunity as men in the humor industry. They deserve as much comedic freedom as men whether it be over their weight, content, or success.
Souped-up SafeRides picks up students
SafeRides plays a crucial role in the safety of LGHS students. Instead of ignoring the fact that some students abuse substances, SafeRides offers a pragmatic solution that serves to prevent drunk driving. The program has had to make some adaptations recently in order to operate under different conditions.
Mr. Burns becomes Internet Famous
In Mr. Burns’ viral video, he simulated the causes and effects of gravity using only a sheet of spandex and a few weights. The video now has 1.3 million views and has been featured on Huffington Post and Reddit.

From a team of forty, the hopes and dreams of an entire sisterhood lay in the hands of seven. Seniors Marcia Lewis and Jamie Leong and juniors Keats Iwanaga, Mhairi Finlayson, Kathleen Humphries, Melina Moore, and Kaitlyn McLaren took the field for the last time this season, prepared to dive and die for a single goal.

The teenage years are a period of great change, growth, and development. We are moving away from our close relationship with our parents and are moving more towards our peers for advice and feedback. It is easy to become frustrated with what can easily be perceived as our parents’ attempts to treat us like children, and easy to shut them out. However, it is important to try not to do this, and to give our parents the respect they deserve.
