After a tough 2024 season that ended with a 1-0 loss to Willow Glen High School in the CCS Quarterfinals, the Los Gatos High School Varsity Girls’ field hockey team is back on the turf, determined to reclaim the championship they last captured in 2023 against St. Ignatius High School. This game marks the Wildcats’ 17th CCS title, and this season, they are focused on adding another trophy to their historic program.
The Wildcats wasted no time building momentum in preseason play. They opened with a commanding 12–0 win over Homestead High School, followed by an 8–0 victory over Stevenson High School, an 11–1 rout of Hollister High School, and a 7–0 triumph over Branham High School. The biggest victory of all the preseason games was their victory over Saint Francis High School, one their toughest competetors so far, beating them 2-0. Each game showcased the team’s attacking depth, scoring power, and ability to control possession through precise passing and patient buildup play. Sophomore Mila Maletic stated, “Preseason was a great way for us to improve and work on our skill to be ready for any game this year. It has really helped us to build team confidence and build a strong bond.”
League competition began on a strong note as well. Los Gatos rolled past Palo Alto 9–0, moving the ball up the sidelines with speed and precision while forcing turnovers that led to quick scoring chances. In their latest matchup, the Wildcats faced Santa Clara and delivered another statement win with a 12–0 scoreline. The offense spread the ball effectively, while the defense prevented Santa Clara from mounting any sustained attacks. Senior Co-Captain Leaya Cleary explained, “The turf of Santa Clara was longer, which made it difficult to play on, but that didn’t stop us from succeeding and claiming another win.” They also secured two more wins, defeating Santa Clara High School 12-0 and beating LynBrook High School 15-0.
Beyond the scoreboards, the team has focused on building trust and chemistry. With a mix of returning seniors and rising underclassmen, players have rotated positions to expand versatility and learn from one another on the field. This flexibility has kept opponents off balance while giving younger players valuable experience. Freshman Gianna Ajlouny commented, “Joining the field hockey team was presented as a great opportunity for me, where I am able to create bonds not only in my grade but also adapting tricks from the older girls.”
Leadership has been another key strength this year. The team’s seniors have organized film sessions, extra practices, and team events to ensure that every player feels prepared and supported. The coaching staff has emphasized not only technical skills but also resilience and discipline, knowing that postseason play demands both mental toughness and adaptability. As Coach Henry (Reyes) always emphasizes, “No matter the score written on the scoreboard, play like it’s 0-0.”
Looking ahead, Los Gatos still has ten league games before the postseason begins. Each contest offers a chance to refine strategies, strengthen teamwork, and prepare for the intensity of CCS competition. The Wildcats understand that the path back to the championship will require consistent focus and execution, but their early dominance suggests they are on track to contend for the title once again.
Fans can support the Wildcats in their upcoming games, including Saratoga High School on Sept. 29, with Varsity beginning at 4:00 PM and JV following immediately after. With a talented roster blending experience and fresh energy, Los Gatos is ready to make the 2025 season one to remember.
