Roberts pursues irish dancing and lacrosse

By Lucy Panicacci

From mastering the uncommon skill of Irish dancing to excelling on the lacrosse field, senior Scarlett Roberts stands out.

Roberts started Irish dancing at four years old. She explained that she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her older sister: “It was something that my sister did. And so, as a little sister, I was just wanting to do whatever she did. So she was kind of my inspiration to start.” The unique style of dancing is a demanding skill to learn, requiring a lot of attention to detail and strength. Over the years, Roberts has grown into a competitive dancer on a national level, traveling around the US and out of the country for competitions. Last summer, she went to Texas to compete in the North American Irish Dance Championships, and in November, she danced teams for Western US Regionals in Phoenix, Arizona. Although she has dedicated so much time to Irish dancing for over a decade, Roberts highlighted that her favorite memory is not the dancing itself. She shared, “I think my most favorite memory is all the time I get to spend with my mom and traveling. A lot of my competitions are out of the country or out of the state, so we do a lot of flying together. So I love spending time with her.”

Beyond dancing, Roberts shines as a top competitor in lacrosse. First picking up a lacrosse stick at the age of seven, Roberts has continued to play for all four years of high school on the LGHS Girls’ Lacrosse Team. During her junior year on varsity, she aided the team to an undefeated league championship on attack, earning her the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Attacker of the Year. Roberts plays on the LGHS team alongside her twin sister, senior Wylloh Roberts. She described the experience of playing on the same team as her twin, stating, “It’s never been any other way because I’ve always played sports growing up with Wylloh. But some positives are that we kind of read each other’s minds. It’s super easy to communicate and shoot a quick look and she knows exactly what I’m thinking and what I’m about to do.” Reflecting on her incoming senior season, Roberts said, “I’m really excited to be like our own team. Every season, it’s like a new energy. And I feel like this season, it’s something super unique and special, like this group of girls. I’m super excited to see what kind of season we have and just how we work together.” Roberts is specifically looking forward to the away game bus rides, blasting music together with her teammates.

Next year, Roberts plans to head to a four-year university with a major in Integrative Physiology. In the future, she plans to become a physical therapist. To see this multi-talented senior in action, come out and support the Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Team!
