Sophomore music talent Lana Leu is warming up for a busy yet successful high school career. From taking seven classes to captaining the JV softball team, Leu proves to be a tenacious student across all facets of LGHS.

At LGHS, Leu has strong ties to the music department. Currently in the Crescent Ensemble as the first chair French horn, she expressed that she knows the ropes when it comes to picking up a new instrument. Leu started her musical journey on piano, moved to trumpet, then to percussion, and finally settled on the French horn. In addition to Crescent Ensemble, Leu has participated in marching band for both freshman and sophomore year. Discussing the process of learning routines, Leu remarked, “Partway through the season, somehow it just clicks.” Aside from her talent for instruments, Leu noted that being in band makes her feel grounded, recalling the strong community ties that come with that class.

Outside of the band, Leu also loves her Manufacturing Technology class. Along with following assignments and learning how to make new things, she also embraces the freedom to craft objects from her imagination. Looking over the previous semester, she commented, “I’ve been able to make things for my friends and family. So I made my brother a little plane for Christmas.”

After school, Leu brings a lot of energy to the Girls JV Softball team. Having the opportunity to level up to the varsity squad, she decided to stick back and stay on the JV team to take on the leadership role of captain. This new position has brought on a lot of learning experiences. Leu explained, “Out of the first-year students, some of them are pretty new to the sport, so it’s helping me figure out how I can help them. I have to figure out ways to make them feel welcome and get the whole team together.”

As for college plans and the future, Leu is open to exploring what interests her in the coming years. From what Leu knows, she sees herself going into a STEM field. She has decided to explore more science and math opportunities on campus, noting her affinity with Chemistry and Biology as the greatest compelling forces at the moment.

Through her exploration of music, diligent work in the classroom, and great team effort and leadership on the softball field, Leu has proven herself a vital part of our campus’s lively and earnest culture. Wherever the next couple of years take her, she is sure to find success!

1. I like to spend a lot of time making memories and hanging out with my friends whenever i get the chance. When I can’t see them, some activities I like to do alone or at home include doing a lot of arts and crafts, mostly things like carving animals, gnomes, or spoons and whatnot. I also took international cuisine freshman year, which I think motivated me to start cooking or baking more in my free time (I also did my English project (Plato project) on Chinese cuisine).

2. I don’t watch a lot of movies. i guess it makes me feel lazy because you kind of need to commit to spend 2 hours watching something, but a good one is probably “10 Things I Hate About You”.

3. I also don’t watch a lot of shows because it also makes me feel lazy, but sometimes I like to have a show running in the background while i do something. This will probably seem basic, but i like Modern Family or any American sitcom like that.

4. This is kind of a hard question because it really depends on the mood so it would depend a lot on when you ask me but im just gonna answer with how im feeling right now. I feel like I’m gonna sound really basic for this, but just having easy busy work that doesn’t take much thinking, so i can stay home and just listen to music while I do work and spend time with my family or friends. oh and also eat a lot of good food.

5. I don’t have one specific person that i look up to because no ones perfect but there’s always good takeaways from the people you meet in life. I feel like my dad encouraged me to live my life to the fullest and not try to grow up really fast which helps me live more in the moment and stop worrying about my future and everything. The head coach of the JV lghs softball team because he thinks very highly of me, and it motivates me to be the best version of me even if it doesn’t satisfy everyone. theres also more people but i cant think of any specifics right now. other than that one thing i want to work on is being a better person for my friends or just living with the midset that sometimes you just have to move on.
