El Gato Recommends: Gracie Abrams, Rom-Coms, and More

Gracie Abrams:

Young and upcoming singer Gracie Abrams released her new single “Difficult” on Oct. 6. In collaboration with Aaron Dessner, Abrams’ most recent hit reveals a rhythmic background that blends gracefully with her serene voice. The 23-year-old is known for her soothing melodies and ‘bedroom pop’ style, which is further showcased on this song. The song itself poetically expresses Abrams’ view of herself as a burden to others around her and explores details of her rather private and personal life. Abrams’ has produced another bop of a song, and fans can hope for a debut album in the future after these amiable singles.

Rom-Coms:

Romantic comedies are the perfect remedies for bad days, or pick-me-ups when you need a break. My favorite rom-com is the underrated Set It Up, streaming on Netflix, which follows two coworkers who fall in love while trying to set up their bosses. It’s quirky, funny, and perfect for a chill night in. Put on your PJs, grab some popcorn, and take the opportunity to watch 10 Things I Hate About You on Disney+, featuring an adorable enemies to lovers arc with compelling characters and many hysterical moments. For fans of action, consider Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which focuses on a married couple (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) as they become aware of each other’s secret agent double life. With stellar one-liners and exciting action shots, Mr. and Mrs. Smith does not disappoint when put on the big screen. As the spooky season approaches, cuddle up with a rom-com for some much-needed love.

Do Revenge:

With a phenomenal cast featuring Alisha Boe, Jonathan Daviss, Talia Ryder, and Sophie Turner, Netflix’s Do Revenge is a must see. The 2022 comedy follows social butterfly Drea (Camila Mendez) as she goes from the school’s “top-dog” to the bottom of the food chain after her boyfriend Max (Austin Abrams) leaks an explicit video tape she sent to him. As awkward transfer student Eleanor (Maya Hawke) battles the idea of having to attend school with Drea, her former bully, the eccentric pair team up to “do each other’s revenge.” If you enjoy Heathers, Mean Girls, Not Okay, or anything with a killer plot twist, Do Revenge is the movie for you.

Pillsbury Halloween Cookies:

The spooky season has every industry in its chokehold come September; its drinks, candles, books, and movies captivate all. But other than copious amounts of Halloween candy, sometimes I feel it lacks in the food area. So, allow me to introduce to you Pillsbury Ready To Bake Pumpkin Shape Sugar Cookie Dough. These cookies simply require an oven, a baking sheet, and 12-14 minutes of your time. You can order them online at the Pillsbury website or get them in stores, including Walmart and Target. These delicacies are sweet without being sickly and never come out too raw or overly crispy. Trust me, these delicious, simple, and cute baked goods are the perfect study buddy, movie munch, or social snack.

Chainsaw Man:

Japanese animation studio Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association released its first episode of Chainsaw Man (CSM) on Oct. 11. This anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga series, serialized in Shonen Jump, is one of the most anticipated anime of the fall. It follows a teenage boy named Denji who becomes a devil hunter in a horror-fantasy world. With monsters, gore, and exceptionally dark themes, CSM is the perfect watch for the Halloween season, although — be warned — it is not suitable for the faint of heart. It features music from Kensuke Ushio, who composed for other animated sensations like A Silent Voice and Devilman Crybaby.

Abba Disco Party:

Sept. 16 and Oct. 8 were single-handedly the most fulfilling days of my life. Step aside Pitbull’s “Can’t Stop Us Now” tour, performed at Shoreline Amphitheater on Sept. 26, 2021 — there’s a new sheriff in town. Its name? The Gimme Gimme Disco party that I had the pleasure of attending not once, but twice! A DJ-centered dance party that plays solely ABBA music and 70s disco…my two favorite things! If you’re in the mood for a mix of strangers’ perspiration and yacht rock, check out their website (gimmegimmedisco.com/shows) to see when they’re coming to a location near you!
