The 2016 water polo season has officially come to an end, and both teams did tremendously well throughout this fall as they played in both the league tournaments and CCS playoffs

The varsity girls team dominated their season. Under the guidance of coaches Don Appleton and Kenny Delp, they blew through their opponents to win the second consecutive league title against Gunn by a score of 9-5. The group marked the moment by pushing the coaches into the pool and doing their traditional cheer in honor of Tessa Joy Davis and Pete Kleis. Afterwards, they celebrated with a pizza party at a nearby parlor with parents, music, and food while reliving moments of the game.

In the wake of their victory, the girls moved on to the quarter-finals of CCS, where they defeated Los Altos with a 14-9 score. They then went on to play Saint Francis in the semifinals, where they unfortunately lost 9-5, marking the end to an incredible season. In light of their successful journey, team captain Zoee Sanchez reflects, “It has been a really hard mentally and physically, but I’m proud of how far we have come and how much we have been able to achieve.”

The varsity boys, led by coach Sasha Potulnitsky, also had a strong season this year. After many hard-fought battles, the boys secured fourth place in the league tournament, ensuring their progression to CCS quarterfinals. In preparation for their CCS game, the boys clocked in several hours of practice a week before the playoffs. However, the boys unfortunately lost against Willow Glen in the quarterfinals 2-8, officially wrapping up their season.

Despite this loss, the team didn’t hesitate to celebrate their hard-fought season by honoring the seniors and looking forward to the next year. Senior captain Tony Cassaccia says, “The team did pretty well last year and I expected this season to be a building year, but we had a lot of guys who stepped up and showed their strengths and it ended as a really good season.”

Congratulations to both teams for their amazing seasons and for enduring a long few months of swim sets and weight belts. In the end, their hard conditioning paid off as both teams were able to make it to the CCS playoffs, marking a pivotal fall semester for the LGHS water polo program.
