After claiming the Central Coast Section (CCS) Division I championship last season, the Los Gatos High School Girls’ Field Hockey Team returns to the turf with a familiar goal: another championship run. The Wildcats defeated Saint Francis High School in last year’s CCS championship game, securing the program’s 18th CCS title and extending its record as the most triumphant field hockey program in CCS history.
Los Gatos opened their pre-season with a game against Homestead High School, earning a 5-1 victory. The Wildcats followed with another shutout, defeating Branham 4-0, before playing Stevenson High School, securing a 6-4 triumph. They carried their momentum into the official season, starting with a 4-0 win against Palo Alto High School in their first game. Varsity then faced Santa Clara High School with a 7-2 triumph, followed by a matchup against Monta Vista High School scoring 16-0. As the season progressed, they went on to _ Lynbrook High School _-_. The strong start has given the Wildcats early motivation while allowing them to identify areas where they can continue to improve throughout the season.
For the Wildcats, however, success is not measured solely by the number on the scoreboard. The girls focus on their performance throughout a game, including their communication, teamwork, and execution. Senior varsity captain Stella Musser emphasized, “For me the best games are when everyone is focused and playing for each other. Even if we don’t play perfectly, seeing the team fight through mistakes and keep working together is what makes me proud.” This mindset encourages the players to focus on the details of their game and recognize improvement. The Wildcats are determined to continue competing at the standard they have set for themselves.
One of the team’s early opportunities to build chemistry came during its weekend trip to Carmel to face Stevenson High School. Away from the field, the trip gave players time to strengthen their relationships and develop communication and trust, crucial things to have on the field. About the team bonding experience, junior Scarlett Schaefer reflected, “It made me realize how quickly a season can become something bigger than just the games we play.” Los Gatos field hockey also held an annual pasta feed, giving players an opportunity to spend time before future games and create a stronger sense of connection among each other. These opportunities have helped establish a community where players can rely on each other regardless of the environment.
With a combination of experience, determination, and team chemistry, the Wildcats are working toward another postseason run while keeping their focus on the process that will get them there. Make sure to come cheer on the Los Gatos Girls’ Field Hockey Team during their next game against Presentation High School on Sep. 29th at 4 PM!
