The 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) offseason has been one of the most entertaining in recent years, with contenders making important acquisitions and teams that struggled the previous season looking forward to starting fresh.
Perhaps the biggest story of this offseason was the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, specifically their role in the Aspiration scandal. Following a series of reports by ESPN contributor Pablo Torre, in September of 2025, the NBA began an investigation into whether Clippers owner Steve Ballmer used Aspiration, a green banking company in which Ballmer had invested, to funnel $28 million to small forward Kawhi Leonard. After nearly a yearlong investigation, on Sept. 2, the NBA found the Clippers guilty of salary cap circumvention, punishing them with a $30 million fine and a one-year suspension for Ballmer. Most notably, the league stripped the Clippers of five first-round picks from 2029 to 2033, meaning the organization will be unable to recruit any young talent. Comparatively, Kawhi Leonard received a much more lenient punishment, sustaining a $700,000 fine, but no suspension.
In terms of actual on-the-court news, the Clippers’ trade with the Toronto Raptors was finalized on Sept. 14, sending Leonard back to the Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and some draft picks. The Raptors hope that Leonard raises them from their first-round exit last year to a strong contender in the Eastern Conference. As a team that has already gone 46-36, adding Kawhi Leonard will elevate the team even further.
After months of rumors, a blockbuster deal finally took Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, sending him to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakučionis. The Bucks also received significant draft capital, with the No. 13 pick in 2026, unprotected first round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick. Miami certainly paid a pretty penny, but a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber is tough to overspend on. The Heat are certainly a team to watch out for; their current roster might lack spacing, but with a frontcourt of Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, two of the league’s premier defensive threats, any squad will struggle to compete in the paint.
LeBron James parted ways with the Los Angeles Lakers, signing instead with the Philadelphia 76ers. Following the acquisition, the 76ers also traded for Celtics’ guard Jaylen Brown in exchange for forward Paul George, first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030. The deals add two major additions to an already formidable duo of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. With so much star power on one roster, the 76ers could dominate if they play their cards right.
With such a busy offseason, the league could look completely different this year. Whatever the case, fans and hoopers alike will see these reshaped teams in action beginning Oct. 3.
