LGHS Wildcat turned Northeastern Husky Sara Rich is making her last semester of senior year nothing short of extraordinary.

Although it is only her first year in Leadership, she has transformed the class in a short amount of time. She decided to join after watching the class make their mark on LGHS throughout her first three years here. Unlike most classes that are assignment and rubric-focused, she explained that leadership “looked like they were actually doing important projects around school.” As one of the senior class spirit representatives, she plans and decorates the spirit hallway and hosts weekly meetings at her home. Thanks to leadership’s collaborative environment, Rich has also met many new people and made friends in different grades. She shared, “I can’t give away the theme of the spirit week for spring yet, but I would say this is probably my favorite one so far, just because it’s super fun. And like, I’m definitely having fun planning it and making all the decorations with everyone. I can already tell that it will be my favorite and the best.” Stay tuned for the next spirit week, starting on Mar. 30!

Despite a lack of interest in STEM topics in middle school, Rich’s freshman year Biology class sparked her fascination with science. Rich commented, “I liked it a lot, and I thought that the labs were interesting. It helped me realize what I’m good at and what I’m not good at.” During her junior year, Rich took AP Biology, and she is currently enrolled in AP Chemistry. With many possible STEM-related careers, Rich is interested in pursuing medicine. She added, “I knew that I didn’t want to do something in an office or have a job where I’m not talking to people.”

Just a few months ago, Rich was unsure about which college she wanted to attend. After submitting her early applications, she started considering where she could picture herself for the next four years. After a lot of research and consideration of location, size, and available opportunities, she set her eyes upon Northeastern. Rich noted, “I toured some other schools like Oregon that are in a small college town. I realized that I was scared of being in this type of college town because I felt like I would feel trapped. But when I went to Boston, I could definitely see myself living there.” An additional aspect about Northeastern that intrigued Rich was its Undergraduate Cooperative Education Program, a program that offers paid work experience related to a student’s major. She plans to participate in the program, which will give her practice working at a major company for a semester, possibly in another big city like New York.

Surrounding yourself with Rich’s infectious laugh is sure to enrich your day. This Boston-bound future doctor is a perfect example of how hard work pays off and how to enjoy your last few months of high school.
