New York City was buzzing with energy this September as thousands of tennis fans from across the world gathered to attend the season’s final Grand Slam. Each year, players and fans can expect unforgettable rallies, thrilling matches, and remarkable performances. This year was no different; the tournament, yet again, delivered everything that makes the US Open a fitting conclusion to the tennis season. 

The women’s draw experienced some fierce competition all around. However, the US Open title holder, Aryna Sabalenka, successfully defended her title with a hard-fought battle against American tennis player Amanda Anisimova. Behind her immense power, improved mental composure, and fast forehand, Sabalenka won her match 6-3, 7-6 (3), earning her fourth Grand Slam win. Though Amisimova’s loss stung, she had a strong and successful run in the tournament. Relying on her powerful backhand and mental resilience, she defeated two former US Open champions, Naomi Osaka and Iga Świątek. She rose victoriously against Świątek 6-4, 6-3, a major breakthrough after a difficult summer, during which Świątek had previously beaten her in the Wimbledon final 6–0, 6–0. Reflecting on the win against Świątek, Anisimova explained, “Today is definitely the most meaningful victory I’ve had in my life,” highlighting the personal significance of this achievement. 

The men’s singles final featured two returning Grand Slam finalists, Carlos Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner. At just 22 years old, Alcaraz showcased his explosive athleticism and strategic gameplay, outlasting Sinner, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to secure his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam victory. Alcaraz played with consistency and power throughout the entirety of the tournament, hitting his fastest forehand shot at 104 mph. His incredible gameplay allowed him to defeat tennis legend Novak Djokovic in a quick three-set match. Sinner and Alcaraz have faced each other in three Grand Slam finals in 2025 alone, further emphasizing their rivalry and dominance at the top of the men’s game, establishing them as rising stars of their generation. 

Outside of Anisimova’s inspiring run, the American professionals struggled remarkably. Djokovic defeated Taylor Fritz, a finalist in 2024, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 4-6. Additionally, Francis Tiafoe and Ben Shelton were both eliminated in the third round, Shelton having to forfeit his match due to a shoulder injury. In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula fought hard but fell short when faced with fierce opponents like semifinalist Naomi Osaka and champion Sabalenka. The shortages in American men’s Grand Slam victories continue, and while the women showed flashes of brilliance, the spotlight ultimately belonged to international champions. Overall, the 2025 US Open delivered action-packed matches and rising stars, marking it as one of the most unforgettable tournaments of the year.
