As the 2025-2026 football season gets underway, Los Gatos High School Boys’ Varsity Football is ready for a winning season that ends with hoisting the Central Coast Section (CCS) trophy. Following a successful season but a tough loss in the CCS finals against St. Francis High School, the team prepared extensively, refining its skills and team bond. This offseason, the team rebuilt its starting lineups after losing many valuable players from last season to graduation, specifically on the offensive and defensive lines. Additionally, before the start of school, the Wildcats had a two-day sleepover in the gym. They spent their days on the field and picking up trash in town, and nights playing video games and eating junk food. Senior Miguel Lezama shared, “Camp is always great, especially when you’re surrounded by family.”
So far, the varsity team has a 2-2 record. In the first game of the season, at home on Aug. 29, LG faced Soquel High School. Despite being a close, high-scoring game, the Wildcats lost by a score of 42-40 after Soquel took the lead in the final minutes.
On Sept. 5, LG traveled to Brentwood to compete against Liberty High School. Although the first quarter ended 0-0, the Wildcats came back from halftime to take down Liberty, scoring 28 points in a single quarter. The quarterback, senior Callum Schweitzer, got the ball rolling by throwing a 37-yard pass to senior Beau Musser, earning the Wildcats their first touchdown of the game. Schweitzer dominated, running in for the next touchdown and throwing 152 yards in total. Additionally, senior Efe Acar had a stellar night, making all five of his extra point kicks. On the defensive side, junior Braddock Boyer and senior Bryce Novinsky caught interceptions, and seniors Simon Panu and Rowan Merrick each had a sack. In the end, the Wildcats came out victorious with a score of 35-7.
The third game of the season, an away game against Clovis High School on Sept. 12, was once again a high-scoring game, where the opponent narrowly won. Despite the 41-40 loss, senior Nathaniel Vorobeichik said that the loss was still his favorite part of the season so far: “Even though we lost, it was a really close game, and I really enjoyed the comeback. I like working hard with my teammates after we score, celebrating and cheering with each other.”
Most recently, on Sept. 19, the LG football team played Burlingame High School, shutting them out 49-0. Senior Grayson Doslak remarked, “The team played great all around, and the linemen and receivers blocked amazingly, making it easy to score four touchdowns.” By scoring the first touchdown, Doslak broke through in this week’s running game. With another standout game from Schweitzer, Doslak reasoned, “The way we continued to work after the tough loss last week is something that is going to help us a lot throughout the stretch of the season. Getting a shutout is a huge confidence booster going into the bye week, but a week four win versus Burlingame means nothing if we don’t continue to work towards a CCS championship.”
The Wildcats’ next game is at home on Oct. 3 versus Pittsburgh High School. With a Pink Out theme against one of LG’s biggest rivals, be sure not to miss this event.
