Recently, local restaurant Coup de Thai gained unwanted attention when Dr. Harjasleen Walia had a dangerous accident. Walia, a doctor working in San Jose, ordered the restaurant’s Dragon Balls, a spicy fried chicken appetizer, and suffered damaging injuries due to the spice of the dish. Walia claims that the Dragon Balls scorched her vocal chords, esophagus, and the inside of her right nostril. In July of last year, Walia sued Coup de Thai for her injuries, seeking compensation for her medical expenses and lost income. In court, Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor discredited Walia’s claims that the dish was the sole reason for the injury. Johnson-Arbor stated that the spices in the dish “are not associated with permanent tissue damage.” Since the court case, Coup de Thai has continued in full service in Los Gatos and has shown no signs of closure.
