On Election Day, Nov. 5, California Congressman Adam Schiff won the election to represent California in the United States Senate. Schiff defeated former professional baseball star Steve Garvey in a decisive victory, with Schiff earning 59 percent of the vote and Garvey winning 40 percent. Although pollsters expected the race to be a landslide in favor of Schiff, the race still signifies the possibilities of potential legislative pushback leading into President-Elect Donald Trump’s second term, as Schiff led the prosecution for Trump’s first impeachment trial. Additionally, Schiff proclaimed his strong stance on protecting democracy from possible infringement, stating “California will continue to be at the forefront of progress, the bulwark of democracy, the champion of innovation and the protector of our rights and freedoms.”
