LGHS Soccer Finds Success

Moving through their respective seasons, the LGHS Girls and Boys soccer teams are both killing it out on the field, boasting impressive records and promising success in their leagues. The boys’ team is currently first in the Santa Clara Valley (SCVAL)-El Camino League, while the girls’ team is third in the SCVAL-DeAnza Division.

On the boys’ varsity team, captains Jack Fliesler and Caelin Goudy have led their team through an undefeated league season so far. With sophomore Max Lees leading the team’s offense and Goudy organizing the defense, the team has easily defeated opponents like Wilcox High School. Flieser describes the team’s victories as a “great start to [the] season. We have such a good group of guys and all are such strong players.” Given the team’s performance following last season, Fliesler credits Coach Joel Fumia with turning the team’s record around. “Coach Joel has really pushed us to be better than last year and it has paid off,” Fliesler said. Whether it is long hours put in at practice or strong team chemistry, it’s obvious that whatever Fumia is doing is working. If the team continues to play this kind of soccer, there is no doubt they will finish the season at the top of their league and, hopefully, on their way to CCS.

For the girls’ team, this is their first year back in the DeAnza division of the SCVAL league, following last year’s season in the El Camino division. Despite matching up against more difficult opponents, the girls’ team is still playing strong and giving incredible performances on the field. Freshman Abby Nelson has been tearing up the field on offense and defense, scoring once against Homestead and twice against Santa Clara. Coming back from an injury in the preseason, captain McKenzie Powell is back and better than ever on defense. Performing incredibly against Leigh High School and Saratoga High School, Powell leads her fellow defenders, telling them when they need to step up and drop back during the game. The strong center back even scored her first goal of the season against Saratoga on Jan. 18.

In the team’s scrimmage against Leigh High School, this defense was paramount as it helped the team avoid conceding easy goals. While the team ultimately lost their game 0-2, it was an incredible match and an awesome opportunity, given that Leigh is currently ranked number one in the league above LG.

Overall, both the girls’ and boys’ teams are playing incredible seasons worth keeping up with. Whether they are killing it on offense or hustling back on defense, these are games you will be sorry to miss. So, come out and watch the girls’ team on Tuesday and Thursday nights, or the boys’ on Wednesdays and Fridays. With one month left, there is still much to come for both teams, so come catch a game when you can.
