Sophomore superstar Brooke Cannan continues to make a splash on LGHS. Just like she was last year, Cannan is a dual-sport athlete, fitting perfectly into both team communities. In the past month, Cannan began her second season on the Los Gatos Varsity Swim Team, and earlier in the fall was part of the Girls Varsity Water Polo Team.
Cannan explained that her swimming career began at a young age, saying, “my mom wanted me to join a swim team…for something to do, and that’s kind of what got me into it.” She added that she really started to enjoy it her 8th grade year following a long pause due to Covid-19. She explained that her favorite part of swimming at the high school is “probably the team and going to practice every day, [also] laughing in the lanes and then trying to race people and just slowly getting better.”
Not only has Cannan excelled in swimming, she also was on the varsity water polo team this past fall. Cannan began playing the sport in 8th grade and described her increasing love and commitment to it. “The summer before my sophomore year, I did club season all summer long, and I was on the Junior Olympics team for sixteens. That’s when I really started to like it a lot.” The close bond she shares with her teammates became clear when she added that making varsity as a sophomore was fun because, “I got to meet a lot of older people and I got close with a bunch of older people who have taught me a lot.”
This year, Cannan is taking English 10 Honors, World History, Chemistry, Algebra Two, Digital Photography, and Spanish 3. Cannan added that her favorite teacher is “probably [Kerry Kepplinger] because I think she’s really funny and she makes math a lot better because I would normally hate math, but she makes it more enjoyable.” She also explained that the skills she has learned through digital photography has made a hobby Cannan already enjoyed all the more rewarding. Looking forward to her junior and senior years, Cannan is hoping to “get into psychology because I think it’s really interesting to know how people think.” She also added that going to a college near the beach and getting the chance to play water polo would be great bonuses to her future college experience.
In her free time, Cannan loves spending time with friends and family. On a perfect day, Cannan explained, “I would go to the beach and I would have a Subway sandwich for lunch with a strawberry lemonade ice refresher [with] little ice and extra strawberries…and I would probably hang out with my friends.” Whether with classmates, friends, or teammates, Cannan knows how to make anyone smile. Always radiating positivity and determined to live life to the fullest, Brooke Cannan will undoubtedly leave behind a legacy at LGHS.
