Zeman Recaps Golden Globes

On Jan. 10 the Golden Globes hosted its 80th annual award ceremony. Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave out 25 awards to 2022’s most remarkable performances and creations in television and film. In his opening monologue, Jerrod Carmichael, the host of this year’s show, addressed the fact that there were no African-American nominators in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Carmichael ended his speech with an acknowledgment of how honored he was to be in a room with so many talented actresses, actors, and developers.

Storming through the film categories, The Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin, and Everything Everywhere All at Once won many of the major awards. The Fabelmans took home the win for Best Drama Motion Picture. In addition, director Steven Spielberg won Best Motion Picture Director for his work on The Fabelmans. Awarded 2022’s Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, The Banshees of Inisherin scored a massive win while also winning Best Motion Picture Screenplay through the work of screenwriter Martin McDonagh.  Additionally, Colin Farrell captured the title of Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for his role in the film.  Furthermore, Everything Everywhere All at Once took home the trophies for two major categories, with Michelle Yeoh winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture and Ke Huy Quan winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

Some other phenomenal performances in the film categories include Cate Blanchett, for her role in Tár, winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Motion Picture. For his starring role in Elvis, Austin Butler won Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. Argentina, 1985 gained the honor of the Best Non-English language Motion Picture. In her role for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Angela Bassett won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. Facing tough competition, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion animation remake of Pinocchio won Best Animated Motion Picture.

In television, 2022 had a variety of shows nominated for numerous awards. To start, House of Dragon — the prequel to the most popular show of all time — Game of Thrones, won Best Drama Television Series. Additionally, Abbott Elementary won Best Musical or Comedy Television Series. At the same time, the show’s producer, writer, and star Quinta Brunson received Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series. For her lead role in Euphoria, Zendaya secured Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series. Furthermore, Kevin Costner attained Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Television Series for his work in Yellowstone.
