LGHS Boys Basketball Dominate Court

The Los Gatos High School (LGHS) basketball season is in full swing with each team performing at the top of their game. The LGHS Varsity Boys’ Basketball team kicked off their league campaign with a home game against Cupertino High School on Jan. 7. The Wildcats battled throughout and prevailed against their opponents, 63-27. Senior Victor Josifovski led the Wildcats in scoring with ten points on four of ten shooting from the field. Senior Max Houghton and sophomore Scotty Brennan contributed to success with nine and eight points respectively. 

Los Gatos entered the action again on Jan. 11 against rivals Palo Alto High School. The site of this game was Saratoga High School due to the recent power outages at LGHS. Palo Alto fought hard, but in the end Los Gatos pulled away for a victory with the help of Houghton scoring 18 and Brennan scoring 16. Senior Tommy Ankenbrandt added nine points for the Wildcats, helping them to secure a 60-41 victory over their rivals. Los Gatos finished the week with an impressive performance against Los Altos High School on Jan. 13, winning 52-33. 

On Jan. 16, Los Gatos faced a tough opponent on the road at Gunn High School. Gunn went back and forth with Los Gatos, but a dominant second half from the Wildcats gave them the win 49-33. Houghton finished with 16 points and junior Nolan Koch contributed seven points to allow Los Gatos to sit atop the league standings at 4-0. Los Gatos will play next on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Palo Alto.

The Los Gatos Girls’ Varsity Basketball team opened league play on Jan. 3 at Homestead High School. Los Gatos played a tight game with their opponent, but edged out the win thanks to sophomore Nicole Steiner’s stellar performance contributing 35 points, leading the Wildcats to a 66-53 victory. 

On Jan. 10, Los Gatos experienced another close battle against Lynbrook High School. The Wildcats’ offense from Steiner and sophomore teammate Ashley Childers, who scored 13, gave Los Gatos their second win – 50-43 – in league play. Next, was a rivalry matchup against Palo Alto on Jan. 11 at Saratoga High School. Los Gatos started slow and trailed Palo Alto by five points at halftime. Clutch plays in the second half by senior Casey Brennan with 14 points allowed Los Gatos to attain the comeback and win 55-44. On Jan. 12, Los Gatos defeated Los Altos 47-29, largely due to a skillful performance from Steiner who scored 24 points. These four wins set Los Gatos at the top of the league standings. 

The night of Jan. 16, featured a non-conference game between Los Gatos and Evergreen Valley High School. Los Gatos escaped with a win after a strong second half, led by Steiner and Childers scoring 20 and 15 respectively. The Wildcats look to continue their win streak on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in a rematch with Lynbrook.

The LGHS JV Boys’ Basketball team began league play on Jan. 7 at home versus Cupertino. Los Gatos played a decent first half giving them a five point lead heading into halftime. The Wildcats came alive in the second half and finished with a 56-30 win. Sophomore Danny Greene made four three-point shots to contribute to the victory. Next on the schedule was an away game at Los Altos on Jan. 13 where Los Altos fought hard throughout the game, but Los Gatos pulled away late to win 51-37 thanks to 11 points from sophomore Owen Panu. On Jan. 16, Los Gatos traveled to Gunn in a highly contested matchup. Los Gatos executed their game to perfection to win 70-47. Greene led the Wildcats with 18 points alongside sophomores Sky Christman and Eli Siri providing strong scoring off the bench. Los Gatos will be next in action on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Palo Alto.
