Tens of thousands of University of California (UC) employees returned to work in January following the end of a historically large strike. More than 48,000 unionized workers — mostly graduate students — went on strike in November before the agreement UC announced on Dec. 23, 2022. UC and the United Auto Workers, who represent academic workers, ratified the deal for starting salaries over a two-and-a-half-year contract. It also included improved benefits for transportation, health care, and child care. UC expressed gratitude to the union for agreeing to enter voluntary mediation.
