LGHS Varsity Football Champions of De Anza League

The LGHS Varsity football team was named League Champions of the De Anza league on Oct. 21; the team has gone 5-0 in league games this year, marking the 40th League Title in LGHS football history.

On Fri., Oct. 21, Los Gatos’ Varsity team beat Wilcox by a final score of 28-7. Within the first ten minutes of the game, senior running back Emiliano Mejia scored a three-yard rushing touchdown. Junior kicker Sam Pearman scored the point after touchdown (PAT). With ten minutes left of the first half, senior quarterback Jake Boyd scored a two-yard rushing touchdown and Pearman kicked the PAT. In the third quarter, Boyd made a 74-yard pass to senior receiver/defensive back Wil Brennan for a touchdown. Pearman again scored the PAT. Then, with a minute left to go of the third quarter, Brennan made a 73-yard pass to junior receiver/defensive back Jaylen Thomas for a touchdown. Pearman scored yet another PAT.

The Los Gatos JV team also won a League Title, going 5-0 as well in their league games this year. During their Oct. 21 game against Wilcox, the JV team won by a final score of 28-7. Sophomores Brayden Smith (two TDs), Justin Mazzaferro, and Zach Otoupal scored touchdowns in the game. Sophomore Jake Gerber scored all PATs.

The JV team then headed to Mountain View on Oct. 28, winning by a final score of 47-0. Smith, as well as other sophomores RJ Cannan, Leon Sarashki, Nate Rodriguez, Grant Murphey,and Luke Rutt all scored touchdowns. Gerber made all but two PATs.

The Varsity team beat Mountain View that same evening by a final score of 56-0. Within the first five minutes of the game, Mejia scored an 80-yard rushing touchdown. A minute later, Mejia scored yet another rushing touchdown over 25 yards. Pearman scored both PATs. A minute later, Thomas got a pick 6 and scored with a 30-yard return. With five minutes to go, sophomore fullback/linebacker Henry Masters scored a four-yard rushing touchdown. Still in the first quarter, Mejia scored yet another 60-yard rushing touchdown. Pearman scored all PATs out of the five that occurred in the first quarter. With two minutes left of the first half, senior running back Chase Hinson scored a 40-yard rushing touchdown. Pearman scored the PAT. In the second half, Hinson scored another nine-yard rushing touchdown. With four minutes left in the game, junior running back Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung scored a 60-yard rushing touchdown. Pearman, as usual, scored all PATs.

On Nov. 4 in Atherton, the Cats beat the Menlo Atherton Bears by a final score of 31-14. In the first quarter of the game, Pearman scored a 16-yard field goal. Before the first half ended, Thomas made a 54-yard pass to Kopcsak-Yeung for a touchdown. Pearman scored the PAT. Five minutes into the second half Mejia scored a 56 yard rushing touchdown. With three minutes to go of the third quarter, Boyd made a 69-yard pass to senior linebacker/receiver Henry Wong for a touchdown. Less than a minute later, Boyd made a 36-yard pass to Thomas for another touchdown. Pearman scored all PATs.

Unfortunately the team lost on the Fri., Nov. 11 game against Archbishop Mitty with a final score of 29-28, with Mitty scoring a two-point conversion in overtime. The boys had a great season, and Los Gatos is looking forward to all things they accomplish in the next year.
