The varsity LGHS girls’ tennis team achieved tremendous success with an outstanding league record and triumph in both the Central Coast Section (CCS) and state championships.

Undefeated through mid-October, the girls went on to win against Homestead High School on Oct. 19 with a score of 6-1. They continued this successful streak by beating Cupertino High School with the same score of 6-1 on Oct. 24. The next day, the Wildcats played against skilled rival Saratoga High school where they received their first loss of the season with a devastating score of 0-7. The team returned to its winning ways, beating Palo Alto High School by 6-1.They ended the league season with an impressive record of 11-1, and then began CCS.

“Our team has never been stronger and this year we definitely proved ourselves. I am so thankful to be a part of these experiences with this amazing team full of such talented players,” Junior Remi Snouffer said.

In its first CCS game, the team played Westmont High School on Nov. 7 winning by a score of 7-0. They continued to the next round on Nov. 9 at Westmont, defeating Cupertino 6-1. Their success only grew when the Wildcats defeated Menlo School located in Atherton 5-2. The Courtside Bay Club served as the venue for the finals of CSS where the Wildcats played against St. Francis High School. Their efforts resulted in a CCS victory with a score of 5-2.

“It definitely felt amazing to win CCS for the second year in a row with this team. Everyone’s amazing, doing their job and cheering each other on during our matches. We all fought our way through some tough matches and seeing it pay off for a victory is honestly incredible,” Junior Fiorella Chen said.

After this achievement, the Wildcats moved on to the California Interscholastic Federation Northern California Regional Championships located in Folsom, CA, at the Broadstone Racquet Club. They left on Nov. 16 in preparation for their match against Red Bluff High School whom they dominated 7-0. They then played St. Francis High School from Sacramento, CA whom they beat 5-2. After difficult matches in the final round against St. Francis High School from Mountain View, CA, the girls managed a 4-3 victory, winning the championships and maintaining an overall record of 20-3.

“Everyone ran out onto the court to celebrate. The award ceremonies felt so neat and being honored No. 1 in NorCal is so unique. Plus who wouldn’t love bringing home a giant trophy?” Junior Annie Kettman said.

The JV team won three of its league games and lost nine, but JV coach Lana Carter expressed that the girls have improved enormously and employed more strategy in their matches.
