88th Academy Awards announces award nominees

The 88th Academy Awards, this year’s most star-studded, glamorous award show, announced its nominations on Jan. 14 during a ceremony at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Over 6000 voting members chose the nominees from hundreds of eligible films.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant leads the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor, Tom Hardy for Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director. Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian both received recognition, with ten and seven nominations, respectively.

Although the 88th Academy Awards are largely dominated by big-name movies, many smaller films have made the cut for the nominations. Critics have praised Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight and John Crowley’s Brooklyn; both are predicted to win big at this year’s award show.

Only white actors have been honored in this year’s nominations, which has generated widespread criticism towards the Academy. This is also the second Oscar nominee “whiteout” in a row. Although the Academy did recognize several movies about black lives, such as Straight Outta Compton and Creed, the films’ black actors and directors were not nominated. However, the white writers from Straight Outta Compton and Sylvester Stallone in Creed received nominations. While the Academy did honor African American filmmaker Spike Lee with the Academy Honorary Award in November, this recognition is still disproportionate.

Despite the controversy, the 88th Academy Awards are worth tuning in to for a glimpse into Hollywood’s glamour and glitz. They will premiere on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Actor Chris Rock will host the show for the second time, and the Oscars can be viewed on ABC at 5:30 P.M.
