On Aug. 25, acclaimed actor Tim Curry passed away in his home in Los Angeles, California; Curry was 80 years old. He left a lasting impact on the acting community, especially through his roles in various prominent film productions, including It, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Clue.

Curry was born in Warrington, England in 1946, Curry attended the University of Birmingham, where he received his dual Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama. He began his career playing the central character Dr. Frank-N-Furter on The Rocky Horror Picture Show (TRHPS). This comedy horror play incorporates numerous distinct drama elements, including a charming low-budget aesthetic and a mashup of sci-fi, horror, and satire. In 1975, the play was adapted into a film, which marked the beginning of Curry’s cinematic career. The eccentricity of Curry’s performance in TRHPS transgressed traditional boundaries defining social acceptability in the film industry by unabashedly integrating certain taboo topics. His role in the film was essential in combatting gender norms and stigmatization during the 1970s. Additionally, this production pioneered the development of cult films: a subcategory of movie productions which entailed the attraction of a smaller, highly devoted fanbase.

Curry further developed his acting career through playing the role of Wadsworth the butler in Clue (1985), a renowned murder mystery classic that emerged from its 1943 board game counterpart. In 1990, Curry played Pennywise the clown in a film adaptation of Stephen King’s major bestseller, It, before going on to play the hotel concierge, Mr. Hector in the popular Christmas movie franchise, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, in 1992.

Tim Curry received a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991 for voicing Captain Hook in the animated series Fox’s Peter Pan & the Pirates. He was also nominated for a plethora of other accolades, including three Tony Awards, two Laurence Olivier Awards, and two Emmy Awards for his performance in a myriad of film and theater productions.

In 2012, Curry suffered a stroke, inducing a fourteen-year period in which he resiliently battled undisclosed medical issues. Despite facing health complications, he continued to pursue acting, appearing as the voice of numerous animated characters, including Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Auntie Whispers in Over the Garden Wall.

Touched by his quirky, comedic timing, unique acting flair, and proclivity for unconventionality, cinema fans around the globe have deeply mourned the sudden loss of the beloved actor. Since his death was publicly announced, Curry’s fans have been paying homage to him through heartfelt tributes posted on social media platforms and by rewatching films in which he has been featured in. Tim Curry left an everlasting legacy, not only through his timeless contributions to the acting community, but also in his uninhibited penchant for his maverick character and individuality.
