The Lindsay Clancy trial began on Jul. 20 after the deaths of her three children in 2023 and her significant psychiatric issues. Patrick Clancy, Lindsey Clancy’s former-husband, called 9-1-1 after coming home to find his wife injured and their three kids dead in the basement. Five-year-old Cora, three-year old Dawson, and eight-month old Callan, all died due to strangulation, and Clancy has not denied that she killed them. Clancy is currently 36 years old and the trial is centered on whether her mental instability overtook her conscious state, or if it was intentional. However, the defense’s case was that she was not in the right frame of mind at the time, citing postpartum psychosis and a preexisting bipolar disorder as causes of her skewed mental state. Clancy had texted her mother-in-law, “‘I’m not okay and I’m terrified of taking meds tonight,’” two months before the incident. Additionally, Clancy’s mother revealed that, prior to the night of the murder, “[Lindsey] told us she had thoughts of harming the children.”
The prosecution argues that Clancy premeditated the murder by sending out her husband on errands and then commiting the attempted suicide and deaths of her children. They showed photos taken earlier in the day of the killings, highlighting that she completed many typical activities, such as taking her kids to doctor appointments.
A central question in the trial is whether the postpartum psychosis truly drove Clancy to kill her three children. Postpartum psychosis is proven to only afflict one to two people in a total of 1,000 women after delivery. It is the most severe postpartum psychiatric illness, and doctors in the specific psychological field express how individuals with this mental illness need multiple trials of medication and periods of hospitalization. Clancy was on medication for anxiety, insomnia, and depression, though several witnesses testified that she did not follow any sort of regime. They testified that Clancy would take the medication only whenever she felt right or sometimes not take it at all. The defense insists that the combination of this misuse and abuse of medication and post-partum psychosis caused Clancy to strangle her children.
On Sept. 4, the verdict came in as a mistrial due to the jury’s inability to come to a unanimous decision with a final count being 11-1. Judge William Sullivan, the official for this case, will present a new hearing on Sept 29. Patrick Clancy will appear on 60 minutes on Sepr. 20, his first interview since Clancy’s mistrial. He is expected to discuss the trial, memories of his children, and the publicity and backlash from the general populace. Clancy remains in a psychiatric hospital until the case is resolved.
