After the team’s victory last year to become league champions, LGHS Girls’ Flag Football is playing to win again, beating three consecutive opponents at the beginning of their season this year. The Cats opened their season against Carlmont, Saint Francis, and Branham High Schools. Notably, they beat Saint Francis with a score of 31-13, Branham 34-0, and Carlmont 7-0.
Last year, the team had a record of 10-0 in league, and 22-6 overall. Additionally, they went to the first Central Coast Section (CCS) Open Division finals, but unfortunately fell to Menlo High School, with the final score being 13-27. The team has used this experience as motivation. As junior Reilly Cronin explains, “I think we have really synced more as a team now, and we know how everyone plays.” Team chemistry is a big component that contributes to the team’s performance. Cronin added that before every game, “We meet up in the field house and the captains all give a speech.” This year, the four captains are seniors Sophie Riese and Kendall Feichtmeir, alongside juniors Helena Younan and Paige Purcell.
Another factor of the team’s victories are their strong foundation of defense, offense, and how they strongly compete. Junior Taylor Payne said, “I’m especially proud of the Carlmont game because our team stayed very strong under pressure.” Shown through their numerous past victories, the Cats play until the last minute even through tough times. Payne also described the team’s environment during the game: “We all lifted each other up, making sure no one is left on an island.”
The team will face several challenging opponents this year. As Cronin said, “I am really looking forward to playing Sacred Heart Prep.” Last year, Sacred Heart Prep proved to be a difficult game for the Cats, as they played them in the CCS semifinals and went into double overtime, remaining victorious with a close score of 6-0. They competed against SHP on Sep. 19, which ended with a score of 19-13.
All grades are represented on the field during the games. Freshman Quinn Peake made an interception during their game against Carlmont and ran 25 yards before sealing the victory with a pick-six. Her older cousin, Purcell, inspired Peake to play. She shared, “They are all such good leaders, and everyone helps you up if you are down.” Freshmen Paige Feichtmeir and Kinsley Ozawa, join her, who have also made a significant impact on the team.
With league play underway, the Girls’ Flag Football Team will look to continue building on its early-season success, upholding their legacy as undefeated league champions. Whether it is their amazing defense or team leaders, the team stands out with their clear sense of community and collaboration in tough situations. The team officially started league play on Sep. 23, competing against Milpitas High School, a team they defeated twice last year, with scores of 12-10 and 19-13. Los Gatos holds a rank of 11 nationally, and 5 in the state of California. The varsity team has a tough schedule ahead of them, but they are sure to give it their all.
