After an eventful season, 2025-26 LGHS basketball is wrapped up! From the first pre-season games, both the boys’ and girls’ teams demonstrated immense potential for a strong season. This manifested as they crushed opposition throughout league, conference, and state play.
The boys’ basketball season began in November when Head Coach Nick Ward, alongside assistant coaches Saumon Tahmassebi and Steve Seandel, put together a dream team consisting of three freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors, and six seniors. From the second they hit the court during their first league game on Dec. 4, 2025, the LGHS boys made sure to give it their all. Fighting their way to the Santa Clara Valley De Anza League championship against Milpitas High School, LGHS lost to Milpitas 36-49 despite their valiant efforts. Earning second place in the league, the boys moved on to the Division III Californian Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State play. During their first State game, LGHS defeated Brave Christian High School 59-46. Two days later, facing off against Willow Glen, the boys lost, ending their season, but having gained an abundance of heartening memories. Senior Dionysios Maroudas favorite moment from the season was “the CCS final where we beat Carlmont High School; that was really hype.”
Similarly, competing fiercely since November, girls’ basketball had an explosive season led by Head Coach Sara Quilici Giles, and her assistant coaches Nick Carmen and Katarina Knezevic. Composed of three sophomores, six juniors, and four seniors, the girls impressively navigated play on the court, gaining the title of the Santa Clara Valley De Anza League champions. With the championship title in hand, the girls’ basketball team began competing in CIF State play. Continuing their momentum during the first round of states, LGHS beat Foothill High School 69-54. Unfortunately, the girls lost to Valley Christian High School in the next round in a close battle. Reflecting on the season, senior Rita Zhou said, “Despite how it ended, I know we did good. We did a lot better than most teams expected of us because we lost a lot of seniors last year. We competed well and worked together as a team really showing our improvement over the season which is the most important part.”
As the season came to an end, the seniors on both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made the most of their final games and celebrated during their senior night ceremony. Senior Will Campbell commented, “Senior night was an amazing experience. We were all thankful and feeling pretty sentimental.” Graduating this year, LGHS seniors made sure to help prepare the future of the basketball program. Sophomore Jenna Webb emphasized, “The seniors really helped us learn to show our leadership on and off the court. I know next year the upperclassmen will be ready to lead the team like our seniors did this year.”
Without a doubt, LGHS Basketball had an unforgettable year that left fans wanting more. Stay tuned as the program continues to train and develop its players to dominate in subsequent seasons.
