Abandon streaming services

As streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and HBO become more popular, people have begun opting for at-home options instead of attending showings at local cinemas. While there are many benefits to these media platforms, the main one being that they offer easy access, going to a theater provides an experience that cannot be replicated at home. Instead of watching new movies on streaming services, audiences should prioritize attending movie theaters for an immersive experience in communal spaces.

Movie theaters play movies on a 50-foot screen and audio from speakers located all around the room. In the dark theater, movies become an experience that engages the senses and pulls you into the story more intensely than films on your 55-inch TV can. Additionally, movie theater popcorn, snacks, and drinks contribute to the overall experience. Instead of ordering takeout or getting up every five minutes to grab another Snickers bar, people can pile up snacks on their tray, recline their chair, and forget about the amount of calories they are consuming. As a traditional part of the movie-going experience, audiences have an excuse to eat lots of candy and buttery popcorn.

When played on the big screen, nobody is able to pause, delay, or interrupt films, ensuring you are more invested and present. Experiencing a movie without turning your attention to your phone, a conversation in the other room, or letting your dog outside allows you to witness the entire showing.

Moreover, studios create movies with the intention of being watched with others. Seeing a film is traditionally an intentional outing where one can spend quality time with friends and family. Now, it has transformed into yet another experience people can enjoy without leaving their homes, continuing the trend of limiting communal spaces after the pandemic. Watching movies the way they were intended supports a dying industry of movie theaters and produces jobs in communities. We see this in our own area, with the Pruneyard Cinemas almost closing due to “financial challenges that include the pandemic, writer and actor strikes, and the rising costs of operating.”

Admittedly, there are many reasons to opt for streaming services. Some might want to put on a movie while doing another task, discuss the plot out loud with others, or simply experience a film without the effort of driving. Ultimately, audiences can still utilize these platforms, they should prioritize attending movie theaters when simply hoping to enjoy the newest film with friends or family.
