Envision a future where electric vehicles dominate our roads, and the landscapes we traverse on road trips adorned with wind-capture farms. This transformative vision, once fully realized, has the power to drastically reduce our carbon footprint and pave the way for a more sustainable future. The trajectory of transportation in the United States hinges on our willingness to embrace these sustainable solutions, with a focus on environmental responsibility, equity, and efficiency. This future is not a mere possibility, but a promising reality we can actively work towards.
California has taken a bold step towards a sustainable future with its plan to establish an electric state-wide train system. This initiative not only enhances travel accessibility and affordability, but, as seen with Caltrans, it also bolsters California’s economy and aids in achieving climate goals. By prioritizing environmentally sustainable infrastructure, we can make significant strides towards these goals. Trains, being one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation, emit significantly fewer greenhouse gasses per passenger mile than cars or airplanes. By encouraging more travel via trains, communities can actively reduce their carbon footprint and combat climate change.
Among future transportation plans, California and US citizens have raised concerns about funding these projects and the climate impact of the necessary constructing. This is the problem for many emerging technologies that market themselves as a climate solution. Take, for example, Tesla, a company fighting against climate change, making their fully electric cars a common trend on the roads. And while they don’t use gas, the manufacturing process of creating a Tesla, especially the electric battery, severely impacts the environment. Tesla addressed the issue and has decided to recycle used batteries and reduce the carbon impact of manufacturing the rest of the car.
The US needs to take the initiative to build the infrastructure for our future. Although the energy electric cars use might not be sustainably sourced, and the manufacture and patience of wind turbines have a massive carbon footprint, we are setting up the necessary infrastructure for a time when we can source 100 percent clean energy. We must focus on implementing more EV charging stations, wind capture, and solar farms. By promoting sustainable transportation solutions and advocating for policies prioritizing environmental responsibility, equity, and innovation, we can shape a future where transportation in the United States is efficient, accessible, and environmentally sustainable for generations to come.
