Celebrities and luxurious designer clothing were on display at the 2023 Met Gala on Monday, May 1. Many stars and celebrities walked the long red carpet into the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Themed for the designer Karl Lagerfeld, this year’s Gala is in honor of the opening of the new Costume Institute exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Popular attire at the event paid homage to Lagerfeld’s work in the fashion industry, incorporating his Chanel tweeds and black-and-white uniform. Athletes, musicians, and actresses headlined The Gala as its hosts; they included actresses Penélope Cruz and Michaela Coel, tennis star Roger Federer, musician Dua Lipa, and Vogue Magazine’s Anna Wintour. Wintour began hosting the event in 1995.
As per usual, the Met Gala included a surprise live musical performance by artist Lizzo, who wowed guests with her voice, as well as her talents on the flute. She accompanied her performance with a sparkling trenchcoat, leaving costume designers in awe. Other stunning costumes included rapper Lil Nas X arriving on the red carpet dressed in a full-body suit covered in silver jewels and a mask shaped as a cat; Lagerfield’s pet cat, Choupette, inspired the outfit. When asked how long it took to get dressed, Lil Nas X stated, “20 minutes.” Multiple celebrities joined Lil Nas X in feline-inspired outfits, such as Dua Lipa, who prosthetically shaped her face to look cat-like, actor Jared Leto wearing a fur suit, and musician Janelle Monáe carrying a cat bag.
To round out the remaining trending celebrities, actress Jenna Ortega showed up in a similar fashion to Wednesday Adams, whom she starred as in Netflix’s hit show Wednesday. Musician Rihanna and her husband, the rapper A$AP Rocky, arrived together on the red carpet; she looked stellar in an all-white dress with white flower petals placed on the outside, while A$AP Rocky wore a suit top with a plaid kilt underneath. Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen appeared in a white dress with a cat-esque fur cape draped over her back. Additionally, many high-profile athletes emerged at the Gala. Reigning NFL Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes walked the red carpet alongside his wife, Brittany. Recently retired American tennis phenom Serena Williams also appeared with her husband, Alexis Ohanian — both Mahomes and Williams dressed according to the white-and-black uniform theme. Furthermore, notorious female model Kendall Jenner showed up to the Met Gala wearing Marc Jacobs and Wolford while continuing the theme of white-and-black. Jenner’s half-sister Kim Kardashian who is also a model, dressed in Schiaparelli. And finally, Anne Hathaway was seen in Versace and Bulgari.
