New York City, along with its police department, agreed to pay over $21,000 in compensation to millions of individual protestors who were arrested, detained, or subject to violence during a protest for George Floyd in 2020. The proposed settlement concerns around 300 people arrested on Jun. 4, 2020 in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx during a protest against the Minneapolis police who murdered George Floyd. Police gathered around peaceful protestors and prevented them from leaving, a technique called “kettling.” If the judge approves the settlement, the amount would be among the highest ever awarded per person in a class action case of mass arrests.
