Sweet Boy by Malcom Todd: Malcolm Todd is a newer artist, but a great one. To say I was mesmerized by this album is an understatement. He’s not particularly a star lyricist; however, he is a master of melodies. Each song feels sufficiently unique while still maintaining some of the same key elements to tie them all together. His music is sprinkled with an abundance of major 7th and minor 7th chords, giving each track its signature sound.
Born to Die by Lana Del Rey: This album makes me feel like the main character of a bildungsroman (especially when my head is out the window). Since the record is one of her earliest, the influence of older artists like Elvis Presley is prevalent in her vocal technique and melodic patterns. Even this early, her lyricism was some of the industry’s best, and it continues to inspire newer, emerging artists like Nessa Barrett and Tate McRae.
One of the Boys by Katy Perry: This is another classic, yet underrated album. It was written by Katy Perry pre-lobotomy and before she went space-crazy, when her style leaned more towards indie-rock with influences from Avril Levine and Paramore. Of course, the classics like Hot and Cold, Kissed a Girl, and Waking Up in Vegas are worth a listen, but other gems from this album are criminally underrated. For example, Mannequin, Fingerprints, and Thinking Of You encapsulate what I imagine it would feel like to be a teenager in the early 2000s. The funky rock vibe keeps you on your feet and may inspire you to join a house band.
Getz/Gilberto-Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto: This may seem like a random, unrelated pick, but it’s a record to remember. If you’re a fan of bossa nova and jazz and perhaps trying to learn Portuguese, this is the perfect album for you. The iconic Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto merge effortlessly on this record, creating songs that are tranquil, yet engaging. The Girl from Ipanema is an obvious choice; however, Doralice and Corcovado are exceptional as well. This album is sensational to listen to on planes, in nature, and whenever you simply crave peace and serenity.
These were just a few of my favorite albums over the years. Whether you’re a sucker for jazz, rock, or a die hard indie-pop fan, one of these albums is sure to go platinum in your household.
