Captain and quarterback of the LGHS Varsity Football Team, senior Callum Schweitzer is now preparing for his first season at Yale University. This natural leader strives for success in all facets of life, while guiding his teammates to do the same.

Schweitzer discovered his passion for football in eighth grade, when he first attempted the sport. Prior to this, Schweitzer played basketball and baseball, continuing with the latter until his sophomore year. His decision to quit baseball came out of a fondness for football. He remarked on the difficulty of training for both sports simultaneously, having to throw consistently for each position. Schweitzer’s high school career began with initial invitations to join the varsity team for Central Coast Section (CCS) in his freshman and sophomore years before he officially made varsity his junior year and became captain as a senior.

Throughout his time on the team, Schweitzer earned his place as a leader, learning what it takes to guide his team to success each season. Both on and off the field, Schweitzer pointed out the best way to support his teammates: “Show up for every single guy and be there for every player.” Carrying this mindset with him during and beyond the season, Schweitzer became a valuable asset to the team and a reliable friend to lean on. His athletic journey did not come without its challenges; Schweitzer faced stress and pressure as the starting quarterback, while also balancing school and other extracurriculars. However, he quickly learned to apply himself athletically and academically, emphasizing the importance of sticking to weekly schedules and staying on top of his work. Having established a successful balance for himself, Schweitzer was recently named National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Northern California Scholar-Athlete.

His many feats paid off when Schweitzer received an offer and committed to Yale University on Jan. 5. Guiding Schweitzer’s decision to commit was the welcoming coaching staff and the support they showed toward him and other players. Schweitzer attributed his interest in the school to the football team’s “4 for 40” program, which involves mentorships and opportunities to guide graduates through life after their four years of college. He reflected, “They’re committed to more than just football. They’re committed to life after football.” Schweitzer plans to major in economics and recently visited the university, where the beautiful campus further strengthened his commitment to the school.

Over the course of his four high school seasons, Schweitzer learned numerous valuable lessons from his teammates, stressing the importance of a strong community. He elaborated, “A lot of places don’t have the brotherhood that we have, because we’ve grown up together throughout our whole life. The most important thing is the community and the love we have for each other, which shows up on the field on Friday nights.” This star senior has truly made his mark on those around him, and although his presence will be missed on gamedays, his teammates look forward to seeing his future unfold throughout college and beyond.
