I was appalled to learn that the penny is officially dead. Do I know when I last used a penny? Well… no. Still, while increasingly irrelevant, the loss of the penny is something that should reach the hearts and minds of every American. Yet, the demise of the American icon is reduced to the humor section of a high school newspaper. Looking back, I’ve had lots of fond memories with the penny: watching Jake Paul buy a Lamborghini with just pennies in 2018, wondering why anything is still priced at $0.99 as I receive a single cent from the clerk, and begging my mom for a penny to toss into a fountain for a little extra luck. Although I have these affectionate moments on which to reminisce, I will miss seeing Abe Lincoln on the sidewalk and celebrating, deluding myself into believing the lucky penny will ensure I get an A in math.
