At just 15 years old, actor Owen Cooper officially made Emmy history. The star role in Netflix’s Adolescence earned him the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making him the youngest male winner in Emmy history.
In the series, Cooper plays a central role as Jamie Miller, a murder suspect, in Adolescence. He delivers an emotionally charged performance as a boy whose life unravels, capturing a powerful and authentic performance. The British drama dives deeply into the loss of innocence and the emotional turbulence of youth, often showcasing fiery climactic scenes alongside a gripping storyline. Critics have highlighted Cooper’s on-screen presence as one of the show’s most impactful elements, earning him victory over several adult nominees, including his co-star Ashley Walters. Cooper was born in Warrington, England, and had originally dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. However, his path to success took an unexpected turn as he began taking weekly acting lessons with The Drama Mob in Manchester. What started as a fun hobby grew into a career-changing passion. Within a year of his newfound passion, Cooper was cast for Adolescence in March of 2024, a role that would propel him to international fame. When his nomination was first announced in July, it was already a record-breaker as he became the youngest nominee in the history of his category. Scott Jacoby held the previous record that had stood for more than fifty years. Jacoby was just 16 when he won for That Certain Summer in 1973.
During his heartfelt acceptance speech, Cooper reflected on his unlikely journey to success, describing his win as “so surreal.” He told the audience, “I was nothing about three years ago. I’m here now, so I think if you’re listening and you’re focusing, you step out of your comfort zone just a little bit.” Additionally, Cooper expressed gratitude to his parents, Netflix, and Adolescence director Stephen Graham, who also earned praise for the show’s writing and direction.
The success of Adolescence extends beyond Cooper’s win, earning Emmys for Outstanding Writing and Directing. Actress Erin Doherty also took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role. In total, Adolescence marked an impressive sweep for the show, receiving a total of 13 nominations and eight Emmy awards. With his historic win, Owen Cooper joins a new generation of young actors redefining what is possible in television. At 15 years old, he has proven that age is no barrier to delivering powerful performances and earning recognition at the highest level. His impressive journey from acting classes to the Emmy stage highlights how determination can lead to success.
