The Los Gatos High School Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team is working hard to prepare for the fall season. While the year is just beginning, the girls have already earned a winning record of 3-1 and taken down some of their toughest competition. Playing with ambition and grit, the varsity girls have realistic goals of making it to the CCS championships and beyond.
The LGHS girls’ tennis program held their tryouts for the varsity and JV teams during the second week of school. Similar to last year, multiple new players joined the team, ensuring fresh talent to strengthen the roster this season. Freshman Sophia Kim is a key addition to the team, making the varsity squad her first year and immediately gaining a playing spot in the second doubles line. The tennis team is also maintaining its strength from last year, with every varsity player with a roster spot returning to make an impact this season. Senior and captain Kaley Do is especially excited for upcoming matches, saying, “We have a very strong roster this year that I believe can do great things. We want to achieve a winning record and hopefully go even further in CCS than last year.” Last season, the LGHS tennis team made it to the quarterfinals of CCS, an achievement they are planning to surpass this year.
Each year, the Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team starts the season with preseason matches. The team first faced off against a tough opponent from Roseville, who won their division last year. The LGHS girls swept the match 7-0 and took down the Roseville team with an overall game count of 84-0. A few days later, the team played against Leigh High School. Without their top three players, the LGHS team lost the match 1-6. After reconvening at practice and reflecting, the team prepared to take on Saint Francis High School. Los Gatos defeated Saint Francis 4-3, earning their second win of the season. After competing in these three preseason matches, the varsity team played its first official match against Monte Vista High School. Last year, the LGHS team struggled against the strong team from Monte Vista, losing both head-to-head matchups. This year, the varsity team beat Monte Vista 5-2 with a crucial win from Kim and sophomore Sejal Pancholy in line two doubles. Coach Justin Stenger reflected on the win, saying, “It feels great to take down a team we struggled against last year. Beating Monte Vista is definitely a confidence booster, and hopefully, we can channel the same energy into our next matches.”
The LGHS Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team is starting its season off strong. Taking down tough opponents from last year and sweeping against talented teams from other divisions, the varsity team is ready to see what comes next.
