After a four-month break, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is finally making its long-awaited return. The league is more competitive than ever, with six different champions in the last six years. Several contending teams in both conferences have a realistic chance of winning the championship.
The Boston Celtics, the defending NBA champions, are fresh off a dominant season where they ran through the playoffs and decimated every team in their path. With a lineup including Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, defensive stalwart Jrue Holiday, and an elite supporting cast, the Boston Celtics are favored to be back-to-back champions this season.
Every team in the Eastern Conference has the singular goal of dethroning the Celtics. One of these teams is the New York Knicks. The Knicks made a trade just before training camp for Karl-Anthony Towns to fill their need for a high-quality center. Coming off a disappointing loss in the conference semifinals, New York used up all its trade assets on Towns. The Knicks hope that Towns can get them over the hump in the East.
The Milwaukee Bucks are another major threat to Boston’s reign. Last offseason, the Bucks took a huge risk and traded for Damian Lillard to give Giannis Antetokounmpo some help. Unfortunately, both their stars missed huge parts of their first-round series against the Pacers, and the Bucks ultimately lost. With consecutive losses in the first round in back-to-back seasons, the Bucks are under a lot of pressure to perform this year.
In the Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks are favorites to reach the finals again. After being outmatched by Boston last year in the finals, the Mavericks added Klay Thompson to give Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving additional support. With Doncic entering his prime, the Mavericks will be a force to contend with in the West.
The Denver Nuggets, the 2023 champions, are looking to return to the heights of their previous glory. They lost many key players in free agency, which increased the load on their star players. However, the Nuggets have a generational talent in Nikola Jokic and a star in Jamal Murray. The Nuggets hope that the addition of Russell Westbrook will be enough for them to return to the West as fierce competitors.
The young Oklahoma City Thunder had a great season last year, finishing as the first seed. However, the inexperienced squad learned some tough playoff lessons, losing to the Mavericks in the conference semifinals. The Thunder, with playoff experience under their belt, will be looking to reach the finals this season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves were among the most surprising teams of last year. They eliminated the defending champions and reached the Western Conference Finals, where they ultimately lost to the Mavericks. With Anthony Edwards blossoming into a superstar, the Timberwolves will want to make another deep run in the playoffs.
Given so many high-level teams, it is difficult to predict the victor of the 2024–25 NBA championship. However, this season is sure to be one of the most interesting and competitive in recent history.
