Meet sophomore Farah Thariq, a dynamic and driven student making waves at Los Gatos High School with her exceptional leadership skills, fierce competitivenesson the badminton court, and sharp wit in the mock trial courtroom.
Thariq is taking many challenging classes this year, including AP European History, English 10 Honors, Pre-Calculus Honors, and Chemistry. On top of these, Thariq is also taking two electives: French Three and Leadership. In Leadership, Thariq is on the dance committee and enjoys it very much. Currently, they are planning the Spring Formal, which will take place on March 7th. “It’s kind of a challenge because it’s very different from Sadie’s but we still want a lot of people to come, and we have some budgeting issues right now,” remarked Thariq. She also helped plan the Homecoming Dance, which happened earlier in the school year. According to Thariq, the greatest challenge they faced in planning the dance was “figuring out how we were going to get water from the field house to the front lawn. We tried to get a water truck, but in the end, we had to have people going back and forth, which was not ideal.” Thariq’s favorite part about being in leadership is “how I have made so many new friends, and I really enjoy doing the spirit rally. Even though it’s a lot of work, it’s still super fun. I’m already looking forward to the second one.”
On top of leadership, Thariq is also on the LGHS Varsity Badminton Team. She started playing the sport in seventh grade because “my dad said I was home too much and signed me up for badminton lessons.” She plays on the school team and also attends practices outside of school to hone her skills. Thariq has been on the varsity badminton team for two years now. Last year, her favorite part of the season was “when I was playing singles, and even though I was not very good, I beat the other girl and it made me happy because she was a senior and also really mean to me.” This year Thariq is looking forward to meeting many new people and playing in games. If she didn’t play badminton, Thariq remarked that she would want to play tennis because it seems similar to badminton but still looks very fun, causing her to consider trying out for the tennis team next year as well.
After school, Thariq is a dedicated member of the LGHS Mock Trial Club. She acts as an attorney and chose this instead of a witness because “I’m not really that good at acting and I think I would be very boring on the witness stand.” Her favorite part of mock trial is that “even though a lot of the trial is scripted, you still have to perform and think on your feet, and you get to meet a lot of new and cool people.”
Whether it’s planning dances, practicing her serve, or delivering an argument, Farah Thariq always excels in what she does.
