Though he is taking many challenging classes, freshman Adrian Hsu continues to participate in a multitude of different activities, allowing him to excel during his first year at LGHS.
Hsu is enjoying his freshman year despite his enrollment in difficult courses such as English 9 Honors, Biology Honors, Algebra Two Accelerated, Health and Fitness, Chinese 3 Honors, Intro to Engineering Design, and Robotics. Hsu remarked that, so far, his favorite class has been robotics. He explained “It’s super cool because you get to build robots, and we get to be independent and do what we want to do on the robot. We get to learn what we want to.” Hsu joined the class because he hopes to one day dual major in engineering and business in a program at UC Berkeley. Hsu is eagerly looking forward to next year and cannot wait to be more involved on the team.
Beyond robotics, Hsu also enjoys playing tennis. He has been a self-declared “undedicated player” since fourth grade. Though Hsu is committed to the sport now, at first, he hated tennis and would have much rather been playing baseball or soccer. However, his mom forced him to stick with it, causing him to find his love for the sport. Hsu’s favorite thing about tennis is that “I don’t have to worry about teammates, and I just have to be concerned about myself.” Hsu takes private lessons and often participates in tournaments so he can stay on top of his game.
Hsu is also the president and founder of the Pulsar Discovery Club. The astrology enthusiast discovered pulsars, a type of dying neutron star, last summer when he and his family went to Griffith Observatory in LA where there was a pulsar exhibition. They have fascinated Hsu since. The Pulsar Discovery Club joins with the Pulsar Search Collaboratory to do real research and analyze data to find the stars. They meet every last orange day of the week during lunch, and Hsu urges people to join the club if they are interested in pulsars.
In his free time, Hsu can be found practicing his violin. He has played the instrument since first grade and practices every day. “If I have time, [I practice for] two hours, if I don’t, one hour,” Hsu remarked.
Adrian Hsu’s freshman year at LGHS is a testament to his ability to balance a rigorous academic schedule with a diverse array of passions and extracurricular pursuits. From building robots and analyzing pulsars to perfecting his tennis serve and mastering the violin, Hsu embodies the spirit of curiosity, dedication, and resilience. His enthusiasm for learning and his drive to explore new horizons make him a standout student and an inspiration to his peers. As he continues to navigate his high school journey, there is no doubt that Adrian Hsu will keep reaching for the stars.
