Los Gatos sophomore Beni Jovanović is anything but ordinary. He is no stranger to hard work as he shows great dedication to ice hockey and life with family. In addition to his fervor for the rink, Jovanović is an avid cook and exceptional student.
In the fifth grade, Jovanović moved from Canada to Los Gatos. Although he likes it in the Bay Area, he stated, “I miss a lot of things about Canada, but I like to think that everything happens for a reason.” He continued sharing, “I one hundred percent want to move back one day.”
Jovanović has always had a passion for hockey as it has been in his family for many years. Jovanović started playing hockey at the age of seven, following in the footsteps of his brother, who grew up playing too. He began playing for San Jose Junior Sharks and currently plays on the Los Gatos Varsity Hockey team as well, playing the forward position when on the ice. With many aspects of this sport to admire, Jovanović stated, “My favorite part about playing hockey is probably the dynamic. It’s not just a one sided sport where you either are hitting or you are fast and scoring. You can be both.” Jovanović hopes to continue playing this sport in college, although he stated that “that’s probably not going to happen.” On top of just playing the sport, Jovanović is a die hard supporter of the Vancouver Canucks and is often seen repping the team.
In addition to being a stellar athlete, Jovanović is a force to be reckoned with academically. A few of the courses he takes include French Three with Timothy Gaylord, English 10 with Tonya Dehorn, and Chemistry with Tyler Murgia. His favorite class is Chemistry because of Murgia’s genuine effort to make class fun. Jovanović said, “It is cool being able to understand ingredients and what they are made of. I like that aspect of Chemistry.” He also loves his history teacher Christine Chido, as he feels she is a genuine kind person.
Jovanović has countless other hidden talents. Some of these include his skills in the kitchen and a special expertise in Top Golf. Jovanović’s favorite thing to cook is cajun chicken pasta, specifically with penne pasta noodles. When asked about his mentor, Jovanović replied, “My brother. He was valedictorian of his high school.” Jovanović continued by explaining that his brother, who is now 21, attends Notre Dame and plays hockey for them. Although these are big shoes to fill, Jovanović is fully capable of filling them in his own unique way.
With a strong background in hockey and a passion for cooking, Jovanović is a superstar within and outside of his athletics. Keep an eye out for Jovanović on the ice and around school— be sharp though because he is fast on his skates and might be missed!
