On the morning of May 16, European leaders from 46 nations convened to hold Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine. The Council of Europe, the continent’s human rights organization, threw Russia out of the council to symbolize the group’s joint support for Ukraine. Through this summit, leaders hoped to outline a system to hold the Kremlin accountable for the damage it has caused by forcing them to give compensation to victims of the invasion and to Ukraine for its war crimes. The Council also hoped to find a solution for forced deportation and displacement of Ukrainian children.
