California Cuts Ties With Walgreens

Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Mar. 6 that the state of California will not renew its contract with Walgreens. His statement comes in response to the pharmacy chain revealing they will not dispense abortion medication in 20 states. For over a month, lawmakers across the country have battled over whether or not they should limit access to the specific drug in question, an abortion pill called Mifepristone. Walgreens’ decision came as a result of pressure from Republican attorneys general who claimed selling abortion pills in these states may be illegal. Newsom asserted that he refuses to work with Walgreens “or any company that cowers to extremists and puts women’s lives at risk.” Walgreens has pushed back, stating that their policies are similar to other pharmacies and that they will continue to provide medication “where it is legally permissible to do so.”
