The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted the 77th Met Gala on the first Monday of May. Beginning in 1946 and gaining traction as a major event starting in 1948, the Met Gala remains an annual fundraising event for the museum. Its attendees consist of celebrities, fashion insiders, and various other influential figures. The invitation-only event and guest list are curated by famous Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who is highly regarded for her prominent position within the fashion industry. For the 2025 Met Gala, the theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a nod to the celebration of Black dandyism in the Western world and the importance of clothing style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora. As always, the Met Gala’s eccentric and annual themes encourage its attendees to interpret the theme in their own style.

Among the notable attendees of this year’s Met Gala was actress Zendaya, who wowed the red carpet and remained a fashion powerhouse at the event. Styled by Law Roach, a sought-after Hollywood stylist, Zendaya arrived at the event in a custom Louis Vuitton design by Pharrell Williams. The white tailored suit paid homage to the Black dandyist historic zoot suit, which is a men’s suit with high-waisted and wide-legged trousers and a long coat with padded shoulders. The outfit also bore a resemblance to the 1971 iconic wedding suit worn by Bianca Jagger.

The legendary Diana Ross also attended the Met Gala, strutting the carpet in a large hat and wearing a white gown with an 18-foot train. The dress featured remarkable detail, with all of the names of Ross’s children and grandchildren carefully embroidered on the train. Met Gala watchers agree that Ross’s outfit remained one of the top contenders of the evening, showing admiration for its Nigerian designer, Ugo Mozie, along with the collaboration of Ross and her son Evan.

Another standout was Janelle Monáe, a multifaceted singer and rapper. Styled in Thom Browne, Monae paid tribute to the Met Gala’s theme, wearing a red, white, and black two-piece suit that nodded to 1930s tailoring. Additionally, she wore a timepiece monocle and a diamond brooch made from 1800 Tequila.

Among those notably absent from the event were Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who normally attend the Met Galas to public excitement. Lively and Reynolds continue to face an ongoing legal battle with the It Ends With Us director, Justin Baldoni. Facing much public backlash, some reports suggest the couple decided to skip the event to prevent further legal drama from ensuing.
