At the age of 65, renowned American actor Val Kilmer tragically passed away on Apr. 1, surrounded by friends and family in Los Angeles after succumbing to pneumonia. Known for his charisma, acting talent, and prominent place in the film industry, co-stars and fans alike mourn the loss of Kilmer, coming out on various social media platforms to commend the late public figure.

Born Dec. 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, Kilmer became the youngest person at the time to be accepted into the Juilliard School’s Drama Division.  His first big break was his role in Top Secret, portraying an American rock and roll star. Kilmer went on to be cast as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, alongside Tom Cruise. Grossing over 344 million dollars worldwide, Top Gun became a major hit, making Kilmer a Hollywood star. Kilmer went on to star in various other films, most notably becoming Michael Keaton’s successor as Batman in the 1995 movie Batman Forever. In 1999, Kilmer played a blind man in the romantic drama At First Sight, which he described as his most challenging role. 

In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, undergoing painful treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and tracheotomy. While Kilmer managed to keep his cancer from the public for two years, in 2017, after Michael Douglas disclosed that both he and Kilmer were battling throat cancer, Kilmer formally disclosed his condition to the public through a Reddit Q&A. Kilmer later released his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry: A Memoir, in which he shared stories behind his most beloved roles, discussing his battle with his cancer diagnosis, reminiscing about his career, and recounting his rise to fame.

In 2021, Kilmer underwent a tracheostomy that permanently damaged his speaking voice. Later on in his career, Kilmer reprised his role as Iceman in the 2022 Top Gun Sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The film was a huge success, grossing a total of 1.495 billion dollars worldwide. During the film, Kilmer memorably brought his real-life struggles to the screen as Iceman deals with advanced throat cancer and eventually passes away during the sequel.In his reprisal of Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, Kilmer worked with a team of engineers from the company Sonantic to construct an accurate model of his lost voice using AI. 

Following the late public figure’s passing, numerous co-stars came out to pay tribute to Kilmer. Kilmer’s co-star in Batman Forever, Josh Brolin, wrote, “You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there.” Director Dylan Park Pettiford commented about Kilmer’s passing as well, referencing Kilmer’s past roles: “Val Kilmer had me wanting to fly fighter jets, be Batman, rob banks, and hunt lions as a kid. They don’t make too many movie stars like him anymore. Generational.”
