At the age of 65, renowned American actor Val Kilmer tragically passed away on Apr. 1, surrounded by friends and family in Los Angeles after succumbing to pneumonia. Born Dec. 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, Kilmer became the youngest person at the time to be accepted into the Juilliard School’s Drama Division. His first big break was his role in Top Secret, portraying an American rock and roll star. Kilmer went on to be cast as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, alongside Tom Cruise. Grossing over 344 million dollars worldwide, Top Gun became a major hit, making Kilmer a Hollywood star. Kilmer went on to star in various other films, most notably becoming Michael Keaton’s successor as Batman in the 1995 movie Batman Forever. In 1999, Kilmer played a blind man in the romantic drama At First Sight, which he described as his most challenging role.
In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, undergoing painful treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and tracheotomy. While Kilmer managed to keep his cancer from the public for two years, in 2017, after Michael Douglas disclosed that both he and Kilmer were battling throat cancer, Kilmer formally disclosed his condition to the public through a Reddit Q&A. Following the late public figure’s passing, numerous co-stars came out to pay tribute to Kilmer.
