Paramount released the first three episodes of School Spirits on on Jan. 30, and it is already proving to be as interesting and twisted as season one. With a total of eight episodes planned for the season, Paramount will release one every Thursday until the finale. Season two is currently streaming on Paramount, unlike the first season which Paramount licensed out to Netflix, despite the show being a Paramount original.
The show released its first season on Mar. 9, 2023, which began the story of Maddie, a high school student who wakes up as a ghost with no memory of her potential murder. She begins investigating her death alongside other trapped ghosts who also died at her school. As she discovers more about her suspects and being a ghost, she uncovers secrets that make everything more complicated and confusing. The season ends on a cliffhanger that changes the course of the entire series. Season two only continues this. The plot twists will shock viewers but intrigue them in what turn School Spirits will take next.
School Spirits has it all, from mystery to romance. Each character, especially the ghosts, has backstories that give them depth and a well-rounded personality. Due to their traumatic deaths, the ghosts each develop through healing their past mistakes and trauma. School Spirits does a great job humanizing each character by showing their flaws while also showing how nobody is evil. Season two presents two potential villains, but makes it impossible to know if they are the victims or villains. While the main focus of the show is uncovering the mystery of Maddie’s murder, School Spirits leaves room for friendship drama, and romance. The show forms well-developed and complex relationships between characters. Despite the slow burn writing style of the show, the love stories have proven worth the wait. Each of these relationships has unfolded alongside the main plot, adding to the story without taking away precious screen time.
Another highlight of School Spirits is the music. Songs like Funny by Searows, Doomsday by Lizzy McAlpine, and Family Tree by Ethel Cain do a fantastic job of setting the haunting tone of the series. It’s impossible to be unhappy with a single song the show’s producers chose.
Season two also introduces new characters without creating unnecessary storylines. The series dives deeper into the lives of other ghosts trapped in the school, shedding light on their deaths and backstories while making them relevant and important to the mystery of Maddie’s death.
School Spirits presents a haunting mystery to viewers while being entertaining and engaging. Go watch the show now on Paramount!
