Wilde Reviews Anyone But You

On Dec. 22, Anyone but You surprised audiences worldwide with its organically entertaining narrative and humorous delivery. The movie was well received and given an impressive 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This thrilling new rom-com follows the love-hate dynamic of 21-year-old law student Bea and her mutual friend Ben as they unexpectedly wind up at the same wedding getaway after a rough first date. Throughout their trip, they must pretend to like each other for the sake of the wedding, but lines start to blur between what’s real and what’s fake. Based on the Shakespeare classic Much Ado About Nothing, this film is sure to become a staple romantic comedy.

The film rose to immediate success, bringing in over 60 million dollars at the box office on its opening night. However, despite the film’s success in theaters, many critics did not enjoy the film, describing the film as “generic” and “predictable.” However many audience reviews contradict that, arguing that the familiarity makes the film appealing to audiences.

The cast includes many familiar faces, including Sydney Sweeney, best known for her performance as Cassie in HBO’s award-winning series Euphoria, and Glen Powell, most famously recognized as Lt. Jake Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick. Prior to the release of the film, rumors spread regarding the co-stars’ potential relationship and unusual age gap. This ultimately led to more attention surrounding the film, causing ticket sales to skyrocket. I believed their affair was a rumor and purely for publicity. However, after seeing their chemistry in the film, it’s hard to be sure. The two deliver incredibly raw and authentic performances so much so that it feels like you’re interrupting something just by watching.

Not only is the romance aspect strong, but the comedy delivers as well. Filmed in Sydney, Australia, the film includes many Australian references and jokes that are sure to please any local. If you see the film in theaters, I guarantee there will be no dull moments. I thoroughly enjoyed the audience’s dragged-out reactions and remarks and would gladly experience it again.

Despite the generic trope of faking a relationship until it becomes real, the film was uniquely entertaining and the perfect balance of whimsical comedy and heartfelt romance. Its versatility makes it perfect for not only avid rom-com enthusiasts but any film enjoyer. All of these elements cohesively make this film what critics have called the “best rom-com in years.”
