Her new gothic inspired single, Patient Zero, is already breaking Spotify records, soaring to the top of the charts, and causing controversy.

Swift’s new track, Patient Zero, blends light synths with groovy electronica percussion, expanding beyond her usual style of upbeat songs. Swift wrote the single after a casual conversation with her friends, stating, “One friend told me that she had an unexpected phone call from an ex’s new girlfriend asking if she had experienced similar behavior from the man.” The conversation opened up the room, with everyone in the group sharing similar stories of being contacted by an ex’s new partner. Swift found the similarity fascinating, prompting the idea behind her latest song.

Alongside producing Patient Zero, Swift also produced and starred in the official music video, premiering the cinematic visual at the Music Television (MTV) Video Music Awards (VMAs). The video’s filming began in March, featuring actress Dakota Johnson as the wife of the toxic ex-husband, played by Colin Farrell. It showcases a dark aesthetic with the video styled as a psychological thriller since Swift collaborated closely with the production designer Ethan Tobman. Tobman, who served as the creative director for Swift’s Eras tour, helped her film the video in a Brutalist-style mansion, emphasizing isolation and death.

Accompanying Patient Zero, Swift’s expanded deluxe album, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore included three other tracks: Cleveland!, Pink Clouding, and Babylon. Cleveland! is an affectionate nod to her husband, Travis Kelce, and his Ohio roots that addresses public commentary regarding her personal life. Pink Clouding deals with the theme of relationship euphoria, describing a state of intense initial happiness and optimism that can ultimately cloud one’s judgment. Finally, Babylon acts as a cautionary tale, with the ancient fallen city of Babylon as a metaphor for a lost golden era within a crumbling relationship.

Despite the commercial success of her recent tracks, the public gave Swift’s deluxe tracks mixed reviews and backlash. Many critics believed the cover art for Patient Zero appeared to be AI-edited, while the song saw a reported 59% drop in streams after its first day. Cleveland! also sparked controversy, with listeners arguing that its materialistic lyrics and defensive attitude toward public commentary on her relationship with Travis Kelce lack the poetic depth of her earlier work. While some fans defend Swift’s more personal approach, others believe her recent music has lost some of the artistic qualities that originally defined her songwriting.

Ultimately, whether praised for her creativity or criticized for her changing style, Swift’s ability to break records and push creative boundaries has contributed to her lasting influence in the music industry.
