We all have our preferences when it comes to food, but some people’s preferences make you stop and question their sanity. There are some food combos that make the taste undeniably better. However, some combos are downright questionable.
The most infamous combo of them all is pineapple on pizza. Some consider pineapple pizza an abomination and believe that people should not consider any kind of tropical fruit an appropriate topping on pizza. Others like the mix of the sweet and sour flavor of the pineapple and the saltiness of pizza. In a recent survey I conducted, 40 LGHS students filled out a form about their opinion on multiple food combinations, and the votes about pineapple and pizza split almost evenly, but there are a few more lovers than haters. The debate about pineapple pizza began in the 1960s when a chef put canned pineapple and sliced ham onto a traditional cheese pizza. Many have strong opinions on this combination, and the debate between lovers and haters does not appear to be ending anytime soon.
Another weird food combination is french fries and milkshakes. French fries are usually eaten with condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard, but kids have become quite creative with their fries. Some people love dipping their fries into milkshakes because the contrast in temperature and flavors makes the fries taste better. This combination is generally more loved than hated, with almost three quarters of the student responses in favor of dipping their fries in milkshakes. Apparently, there are people who also like their fries with syrup, but the majority of the survey takers voted to pass on this combination.
One of the most surprising results on the form was people’s opinions about sugar on tomatoes. This dish is somewhat common in the US, particularly in the south. Many people who took the survey voted no. If you pause and consider this pairing, it makes sense because the sugar balances out the acidity of the tomatoes.
The survey results show syrup and bacon as a moderately common combination. Although it may sound weird, many people enjoy the mix of flavors. A student suggested its addition to the form, but the combo had extremely divided opinions: the votes were exactly fifty-fifty. However, the breakfast combo of syrup and scrambled eggs provoked greater controversy. Multiple students expressed their disgust of the combination, but it is not extremely uncommon either. Would you let syrup touch your bacon or eggs on the breakfast plate?
The only unanimous decision involved the combination of ketchup and cake. It was another student’s suggestion and actually pops up on google if you search “ketchup cake.” Everyone voted no on that one. Would you ever have a slice of ketchup cake for dessert?
