As Han Tang progresses through his sophomore year, he leaves his mark through different activities including sports, extracurriculars, and academics. Juggling AP and honors courses, Track and Field, as well as Mock Trial is not a challenge many are willing to take on, but Tang has executed them with a passionate pursuit.
With a difficult class schedule, Tang is taking high-level courses such as AP European History, Pre-Calculus Honors, English Honors, AP Chinese, Principles of Engineering, and Chemistry. Though Tang’s favorite subject is math, the engineering course he is taking fits perfectly with what he would like to pursue as a career. Tang explained his elective choice, saying, “It was cool being in [Rodrigo Copelli’s] class last year, and in the future, I would like to go into that type of stuff.”
Tang is also a part of the school’s Mock Trial Club. He said that he joined because “my friend’s older sister who was a senior told me to.” He acts as an attorney on the team, saying that he chose that over a witness because “I want to be able to argue against other people a little more.” Tang elaborated on his experience with mock trial, remarking that his “favorite part of mock trial is being able to work with others who enjoy mock trial and being able to practice public speaking.”
This sophomore is also on the LGHS Boys’ Varsity Track and Field Team. He is currently 10th at CCS as a sophomore and holds the second-fastest time for the 200-meter in LGHS history. Tang said his goal for this season is to “break the 400-meter sophomore record.” Tang began his track career in eighth grade when he ran cross country. Tang explained, “After doing cross country, I wanted to try track, and I did really well that season. In freshman year, I put more work into track, and now I’m just trying to do what I did last year.” Currently, Tang competes in the 200-meter, 400-meter, and the 4×400 relay. Tang described the team’s dynamics: “We all like to motivate each other, especially the relay teams. LGHS is a really competitive team, and we all push each other to finish strong so that we can perform better at our next meet.” Tang’s pre-meet ritual is eating a banana and a pack of skittles to prepare for his race.
When asked how he balances these various commitments, Tang explained, “I feel motivated to do it from seeing the success from different things. You just have to find what works for you.” During Tang’s time off, he enjoys spending time with his friends, saying that, “hanging out with friends has definitely helped me balance school life and sports.”
Whether he is training to be the next Usain Bolt, excelling in his difficult course load, or defending a witness in a mock trial, Han Tang performs his best wherever he can. With his passion, dedication, and determination to be better, Tang continues to flourish.
