The LGHS Girls’ Basketball Teams have completed league matches, excelling through competition, striving towards Central Coast Section (CCS), and making their presence known throughout the Bay Area. Both teams finished undefeated in the league with records of 10-0 for varsity and JV, placing them at the top of the league’s standings. Senior Nicole Steiner explained that league matches have moved swiftly: “We usually have really good team wins, and everyone plays a lot. We’re good at staying locked in the whole time, and we use it to practice new things that we want to do against harder competition like press and different defenses.”
On Feb. 7, the varsity team faced Lynbrook and defeated the Vikings 48-36. However, the following day, the Wildcats challenged Carondelet, the nineteenth-ranked team in California, losing with a final score of 57-85. Freshman Kate Langner said, “Coach Sara Quilici Giles tries to coach us, not just about basketball, but about life. Every win, every loss, she teaches and uses it as an opportunity for us to learn.”
In non-league matches, the varsity team has faced tough opponents, and even though several have been losses, Steiner commented, “When we play higher competition, it’s also really fun because they aren’t out of reach. A lot of the games were close, and they taught us how to face adversity, and it allowed us to grow a lot in the middle of the season rather than late during playoffs. Our hard pre and midseason schedule makes us much more prepared for playoffs.”
The JV team has dominated league play, consistently securing impressive victories with a margin of over thirty points in many of their matchups. Freshman Monika Leaverton explains, “Our team dynamic has been a key factor in our success, as we all get along and share a strong sense of unity.” At the moment, JV has only experienced two losses: one against Valley Christian and the other against Archbishop Mitty. Throughout the season, they have significantly improved their teamwork, overcoming obstacles and making great strides forward, making their goal of league champions clear.
The Wildcats held their annual senior night on Feb. 11, a heartwarming event during which parents and players celebrated the contributions of Steiner, Ashley Childers, Ella Rabitz, and Lucy Panicacci. Each player delivered an outstanding performance on the court, leading the LGHS Girls’ Varsity Team to a decisive 65-53 victory over Monta Vista. The JV team also triumphed 73-13, extending their undefeated streaks in league play. On Feb. 17, the Wildcats capped off their league season with a dominant performance, defeating Milpitas 59-22 in the varsity game and 43-17 in the JV match. Both teams secured perfect 10-0 records, clinching the title of league champions!
