On May 11, Rick Slayman, the first man to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, died. In a statement, Massachusetts General Hospital said there was “no indication” that the transplant caused Slayman’s passing. The surgeon who operated on Slayman said he hoped the transplanted kidney would work for at least two years. Slayman’s family stated, “Our family is deeply saddened about the sudden passing of our beloved Rick, but take great comfort knowing he inspired so many. Millions of people worldwide have come to know Rick’s story.”
